Be Ready for Storm: Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain, Small Tornadoes to Lash Auckland

Gale-force winds, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and the possibility of small tornadoes are forecast to hit Auckland on Thursday, as a front moves up the North Island.

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the region, with the worst of the weather expected between 4pm and 10pm.

The weather service is warning of the potential for surface flooding, slips, and power outages, and is urging people to take precautions.

Auckland Emergency Management duty controller Rachel Kelleher said the city is well-prepared for the storm, but residents should be ready to take action if necessary.

"We're asking people to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best," Kelleher said.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for the storm:

  • Secure loose objects around your home and yard.
  • Bring in outdoor furniture and pets.
  • Clear gutters and drains to prevent flooding.
  • Stock up on essential supplies, such as food, water, and a first-aid kit.
  • Have a plan in place for what to do if the power goes out.
  • Stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and warnings.

If you are caught in a storm, MetService advises that you should:

  • Move to a safe place indoors, away from windows and doors.
  • If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road and wait for the storm to pass.
  • Avoid walking or swimming in floodwaters.
  • If you see a tornado, take cover immediately in a basement or interior room.
