South African Elections 2024: ANC Leads with Over 40% of the Vote
Early Results Show Ruling Party Maintaining Majority
Votes Still Being Counted, Opposition Parties Closing In
The African National Congress (ANC), South Africa's ruling party, has taken an early lead in the 2024 general elections, according to preliminary results released by the Electoral Commission of South Africa. With over half of the ballots counted, the ANC has secured more than 40% of the national vote.
Voters in Johannesburg reported to CNN that they turned out in large numbers to cast their ballots, expressing hopes for a positive future for the country. Former President Jacob Zuma was seen waving to supporters after casting his vote in Nkandla, Kwazulu-Natal.
The ANC faces challenges from opposition parties, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) gaining ground. As the results continue to trickle in, it remains to be seen whether the ANC will retain its majority in Parliament or if the country will witness a change in power.
